Solar panels are one of the cheapest and most efficient ways of generating electricity but they also take up a lot of space.<\/p><p>Innovative schemes have seen them attached to car parks, trash heaps, and farms. Now, researchers are urging governments to invest in floating\u00a0solar. According to a\u00a0study\u00a0published in the journal Nature, covering 30 per cent of the surface of the world\u2019s 115,000 reservoirs with solar could generate 9,434 terawatt hours of\u00a0power\u00a0annually.<\/p><p>That\u2019s more than triple the\u00a0energy production of the EU, which reached 2,785.44 terawatt hours in 2021.<\/p><p>Researchers at the University of Cambridge are working on creating &#8216;floating factories&#8217; to produce net-zero fuel.\u00a0They have developed a floating artificial leaf which transforms sunlight, water and carbon dioxide into a green fuel. Solar may be far better for the planet than natural gas &#8211; but it takes up about 70 times as much land per unit of energy.<\/p><p>They are just like normal \u2018photovoltaic\u2019 cells, which generate electricity from sunlight. The only difference is that they float on pontoons &#8211; earning them the nickname \u2018floatovoltaics.\u2019<\/p><p>Solar\u00a0needs a stable, unshaded water surface &#8211; making an irrigation canal, quarry lake, or reservoir the ideal location.<\/p><p>The first floatovoltaic system was installed in 2008. The Dezhou Dingzhuang Floating Solar Farm in\u00a0China\u00a0is the largest facility in the world and covers nearly 600 hectares.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-6f78a57 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"6f78a57\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-edcb3e2\" data-id=\"edcb3e2\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-89c77d4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"89c77d4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What is the potential of floating solar?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-e9f438c elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"e9f438c\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-e967111\" data-id=\"e967111\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-579ab0d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"579ab0d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Less than one per cent of the world\u2019s solar installations are currently floating &#8211; but according to the study in Nature, they have \u201chuge potential.\u201d<\/p><p>\u201cConsidering the proximity of most reservoirs to population centres and the potential to develop dedicated local power systems, we find that 6,256 communities and\/or cities in 124 countries, including 154 metropolises, could be self-sufficient with local FPV (floating photovoltaic) plants,\u201d the authors write.<\/p><p>Floating solar could also prevent water loss from evaporation. According to the GLOBAL Carbon project, we have 380 billion tonnes of CO2 left in the global carbon budget.<\/p><p>This is the amount of carbon dioxide we can release and still have a 50 per cent chance of avoiding 1.5 degrees of warming. In 2022, carbon emissions reached an\u00a0all-time high\u00a0of 36.8 billion tonnes.<\/p><p>But it\u2019s not all bad news. Countries are also pouring money into renewables.
